John Roland Barker (1911–1959) painter, poster designer and mural painter studied at Leicester School of Art. He originally wanted to be a portrait painter but after travelling abroad on a scholarship from the International Guild of Decorators became a graphic designer in 1934. He worked as an assistant to Austin Cooper while teaching at Eastbourne School of Art. He designed posters for the GPO, BBC, London Passenger Transport Board, HMV and the Orient Line, and experimented with using photography in posters. In 1950 he won the competition for the British section of the European Recovery Programme. He also designed textiles and did illustrations for books and magazines. Barker produced all of the seven posters used in Shell’s ‘See Ireland First’ campaign. The campaign featured scenes of the Irish landscapes that were untouched by the motorist.
