Lotus JPS Europa

'If you've just bought an ordinary sports car...we're sorry.' So said the 1971 advertising campaign. Announced in 1966, the Europa (or Lotus Type 46) initially utilised the 1,470cc Renault 16 engine and gearbox.

In 1972, Emerson Fittipaldi won the Formula One World Championship driving a Lotus Type 72D, better known as the John Player Special. To commemorate this achievement, Lotus introduced the big-valve twin-cam engined Europa Special (Type 74) – one hundred of which were liveried in the JPS colours. Standing at just over 3½ feet high, the rear-engined 5-speed Special could accelerate from 0-60mph/96.56kph in 6.6 seconds. This example has covered just 10,500 miles from new.
