Conservation of the Percy Lambert racing silks 

After many years of trying to raise funds for the conservation of Percy Lambert’s racing silks, we are delighted to announce that funding has been secured through The Arts Council Designation Development Fund. This has allowed us to commission interventive conservation treatment to stabilise and support the silks.

The National Motor Museum has collaborated with Southampton Solent University to create an exciting motor racing game and exhibition space for our visitors. The project is jointly funded by Southampton Solent University and the European ‘VIVID’ initiative which seeks to enhance visual design in the heritage sector.

The Beaulieu Racer video game is based on vehicles from the Museum’s Collection including the 1903 Napier Gordon Bennett, 1904 De Dion Bouton, 1928 Austin Seven Tourer and the 1971 Ford Capri. The player has the opportunity to design their own vehicle by mixing up different car parts and then race around the track to set the best lap time.

What's New

Donation of the Percy Lambert Plaque 

Andrea Bishop of the National Motor Museum presents the plaque to Allan Winn at Brooklands Museum

A plaque commemorating Percy Lambert’s achievement of being the first man to drive 100 miles in one hour has gone on permanent display at Brooklands Museum, after being donated by the National Motor Museum Trust.

Lambert’s record breaking distance was achieved at Brooklands on the 15th February 1913. Driving in a streamlined Talbot belonging to the Earl of Shrewsbury, Lambert broke the record by driving 103.76 miles within the hour. To commemorate the occasion, a brass plaque was placed on the wall of the Clubhouse where it remained until the track closed. Tragically, the same year, on the 31st October 1913, Lambert was fatally injured trying to improve on his own record and was pronounced dead on arrival at Weybridge Cottage Hospital.

Kids in Museums Takeover Day 2013

Takeover Day, a national initiative run by Kids in Museums, took place in November 2013. The day celebrated the contribution of children and young people to museums, galleries and historic houses.

The National Motor Museum got involved by visiting Year 11 GCSE Business and Communication Systems students at Highcliffe School near Christchurch, Dorset. The museum’s team inspired students about writing in museums and tasked them with creating object captions.

Here you can see a selection of exhibition captions produced by the students. Information was taken from the catalogue records of objects in The Caravan Club Collection, and edited to squeeze into the 40 word limit.

Museums and Galleries Month 2008

We worked in partnership with St Barbe Museum, New Forest Centre, local schools and the New Forest Poetry Society to produce a series of poems in response to each museum's collections. These were displayed within each museum and then an exhibition of all the poets' and students' work was shown at the New Forest Centre in July 2008.

This successful project was a fantastic opportunity for audiences to bring our exhibits to life with their different stories.

Bill Tuttle Race Programmes 1950 -1953 

Little known Isle of Man TT winner, William Tuttle (also known as the ‘Wakefield Wizz’) is thought to have been a talented trials motorcyclist in his early years who later went onto win three TT races and a number of continental 125cc Grand Prix races in the late 1940s to early 1950s.

Trained as a dispatch rider in the Royal Corps of Signals, Tuttle served with distinction in occupied Europe after D-Day. Mentioned in dispatches twice, Sergeant W. Tuttle was demobilised in 1946.

A quietly spoken family man popular with the crowds and fellow competitors alike he managed to escape the attention of the press, making these race programmes believed to be signed by him, even more special.

The star prize of a Mini Cooper Coupe in the 2013 National Motor Museum Trust prize draw was won by Emily Talbot from Romford (ticket no. 025792).

  • 2nd prize – a seat on the London to Brighton Run 2014, with accommodation in London for 1 night, was won by Vicky Zappia from Broadstone (ticket no. 019782).
  • 3rd prize – a ride in a Rolls-Royce from the Museum collection with lunch in Palace House, was won by Lucy Milbank from Whaplode (ticket no. 017402).
  • 4th prize - Garmin Sat Nav, was won by Martin O'Toole from Chertsey (ticket no. 029635).

Stephanie Gonsalves recieves the key to her new car

The 2014 National Motor Museum Trust prize draw took place on the 5th November. This years star prize, a Peugeot RCZ GT Sports Coupe went to Stephanie Gonsalves from High Wycombe (ticket 024198).

Stephanie was presented with the keys to her new car by Lord Montagu and the National Motor Museum's Chief Executive, Russell Bowman, at a special ceremony inside the Museum.

The runner-up prize of a seat on the 2015 London to Brighton Run with one night’s accommodation in London went to Fred Reynolds from Georgia, USA (ticket 008224). Third prize, a Garmin Sat-Nav, was won by Sheena Barwell from Swindon, (ticket 011205).

Thank you to all those who took part in the draw which raised over £30,000 to further the work of the National Motor Museum Trust.

Paris-Madrid Rally 2014 

1903 Napier

Gordon Bennett Race 1903, British team of Edge, Jarrott and Stocks

In May 2014 the National Motor Museum entered the 1903 Napier into the H&H Paris-Madrid Rally. The Museum was competing for the Charles Jarrott Trophy, in honour of the pioneering British driver who led the field in the Paris-Madrid rally of 1903. It was particularly fitting that the Museum's Napier should compete for this Trophy, as this historic machine was actually driven by Jarrott himself in the 1903 Gordon Bennett Race.

Become a Volunteer

Volunteer packing art works

There are opportunities to work with National Motor Museum staff on a voluntary basis in many of our collections.

Whether your particular interests are in motoring costume, artwork, motorsport, social history or motor engineering, you will find something which appeals. Both research and hands-on skills are needed to help our staff develop the collections.

You needn't be an expert in motoring history to become a member of our team, just have an enthusiastic and flexible approach. The amount of time each volunteer gives us varies from one to several days per week. Training is provided and many benefits are offered including free membership of the Friends.

We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers. Please contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Helen Keisel, for more information or use the online form if you are interested in joining us.

1966 AUSTIN A40 FARINA - Aka ‘Tubby' 

‘Tubby’ was first registered on the 18th April 1966.

With just one owner from new, ‘Tubby’ was offered to the National Motor Museum Trust as a bequest in 1990 having been driven a total of 83,000 miles by his owner, Mrs M Jackman of Paignton, Devon.

At this moment in time ‘Tubby’ is in need of some TLC in order to get him running again. In order to achieve this a full service, overhaul of brakes, MOT, new tyres and a re-spray are needed.

1971 FORD CAPRI

This has to be one of the most carefully looked after cars you will ever encounter.

The National Motor Museum Trust was gifted this 1971 Ford Capri in 1994 by Mr B G Cutler of Wimborne.

Having owned the Capri from new, Mr Cutler never used it on Motorways, rarely drove it faster than 40 mph and only ever used it to drive 2 miles each day to visit a relative – and if he ever drove it on salted roads it was always washed immediately afterwards – even at night.

Sadly, time has taken its toll, meaning that the tyres are now badly perished and the vinyl roof has become worn. With your help we can continue the care of this lovely Capri.

Plate 1113 Gentleman's Driving Phaeton.

First published in 1880 as The Coach Builders’, Harness Makers’ and Saddlers’ Art Journal this periodical underwent a number of title changes to reflect the growing interest in the motor car and by 1901 was featuring illustrations of motor vehicles alongside those of the more traditional horse-drawn carriage such as the two colour plates shown here of a Gentleman’s Driving Phaeton and a Panhard Phaeton Motor Car.

Introduced in the 18th century and named after a character in Greek mythology, the four-wheeled horse-drawn Phaeton was a light carriage with open sides in front of the seat. The Highflyer, an extreme form made popular by George IV when he was Prince of Wales could be viewed as the sports car of its day, the horse-drawn equivalent of a Jaguar E-Type or Aston Martin DB4. Young men drove their Phaetons with great dash at high speeds with their groom or 'tiger' perched up on the seat behind them.

Seaside Days Out

The day trip to the beach was made popular by the Victorians who believed that fresh air and sea water benefited the health. Unlike today, it was not fashionable to get a sun tan, people much preferred to stay covered. Beaches were often restricted to a single sex.

The introduction of bank holidays and paid holidays made day trips to the coast a highlight for the working population. Industrial towns and cities were left behind for the freedom of the seaside.

By the 1930s the charabanc had evolved into more a comfortable form of transport: the motor coach. Coupled with the growth in availability of cars, these new forms of transport led to more far-flung days out.

In the mid-1960s a bank holiday trip to the seaside became notorious for the violent clashes of rival teenage gangs: The Mods and The Rockers. The sharp-suited scooter-crazy Mods and leather-clad motorbike-riding Rockers briefly turned resorts such as Brighton, Clacton and Margate into battlegrounds.

By the 1970s seaside trips were in sharp decline. The freedom of the motor car led to families seeking alternative days out while coastal resorts failed to invest in their future.

In recent years there has been a boom in British tourism, many seaside towns are being regenerated and revived as the popular destinations they once were.

Touring Britain

Early motorists faced many challenges. Some people saw cars as a noisy and dangerous nuisance while local police forces often hounded motorists with makeshift speed traps. To fight for motorists’ rights organisations like the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) and the Automobile Association (AA) were formed. These clubs later provided a range of support services including emergency breakdown assistance.

In addition, motor cars were notoriously unreliable and there was no such thing as a roadside garage. Maintenance and navigation equipment such as puncture repair kits, spare parts and maps had to be packed for the trip. Before the late 1920s even fuel had to be carried as there were few petrol outlets. The rise in motoring eventually led to an increase in local garages and service stations en-route which provided fuel and sometimes maintenance.

By the 1950s many touring accessories were introduced for the travelling masses. Publications such as The Shell Guides provided tourist information on popular British destinations, while games such as I-Spy books and packs of cards kept children occupied on long trips.

In recent years the digital age has revolutionised motoring accessories. Motorists often find their way by satellite navigation while children are entertained with television screens and portable computer games.

Triumph Twin 3TA

On Display

Early in 1957, Triumph announced a new machine with a twin-cylinder engine that would revive their interest in the 350cc class. The model was called the Twenty-One in celebration of Triumph Engineering Company's 21st birthday. The most striking feature of the new bike was its styling. Inevitably, the rear enclosure, reminiscent of an old-fashioned hip bath, became known as the bathtub.

A year after introduction, the 350 was given the name 3TA. In 1962 The Motor Cycle magazine road tested one example over 900 miles (1,448.41 kilometres). They reported it to be quick and nimble with good brakes, minimal vibration and a fuel consumption of 66mpg. Production of the 3TA ceased in 1966.
