The XJR-8 was raced during the 1987 World Sportscar Championship only, but virtually swept the board at each round. In Sportscar racing, each team fields several drivers per car. At Le Mans, sharing car number 4 with Eddie Cheever and Jan Lammers, Brazilian Raul Boesel was lying second after 18 hours, yet finished in fifth place due to gearbox breakage.

With various driving partners, however, Boesel won at Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Nurburgring and Spa Francorchamps, and second in Fuji, Japan to clinch the world title. Of the ten rounds Tom Walkinshaw Racing prepared XJR-8s entered as the Silk Cut Jaguar team, they were victorious in eight, claiming the Teams' Championship title.
