This peculiar type of machine represents a craze that started in the United States. The name, Chopper, applies generically to the type and comes from the American use of 'chop' when a standard machine is extensively modified in external appearance. The long front‑fork stanchions, small front wheel, high handlebar and laid‑back riding position gave poor handling qualities.
