Tyrrell Ford 001

Not on Display

Ken Tyrrell unveiled his first car, 001, after a mock-up was developed in complete secrecy in the garage of the car’s designer, Derek Gardner. Bearing much resemblance to the Matra MS80, it was entered into three Grand Prix late in 1970. Although Jackie Stewart took Pole Position in Canada, the car suffered mechanical problems and failed to finish any of the races.

Over the winter, the design was gradually refined and three cars, numbered 002-004, were readied for the 1971 season. Stewart provided Tyrrell with their first victory in Spain and from then on dominated the Championship with wins in Monaco, France, Britain, Germany and Canada. Teammate, François Cévert added the US Grand Prix to the tally giving Tyrrell the Constructors’ Championship, with more than twice as many points as second placed team, BRM.
