This outstanding leather-bound album from the early 1900s, depicts Fowler Steam Engines. It has recently been catalogued by a team of volunteers and staff, making it available for viewing for the very first time.
A class B5 Lion special armoured compound road locomotive no. 8894 and armoured wagon train built in 1900. This prototype of a series of armoured engines is undergoing tests in Leeds for the War Office prior to being shipped to South Africa to serve in the Boer War. The train comprised a haulage engine weighing 22 tons and three armoured wagons to carry ammunition for two 4.7 howitzer cannons weighing 60 tons.
