About the Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection

The National Motor Museum is home to the Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection, the UK’s foremost public resource linked to the heritage of British leisure caravan touring.

This varied Collection complements and expands the museum’s leisure motoring themed collections. Originally formed in 1907 as The Caravan Club of Great Britain and Ireland, the Caravan and Motorhome Club is Europe’s premier touring organisation, representing over one million caravan and motorhome owners.

The Collection

In 2006 the Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection was transferred to the National Motor Museum Collections Centre from Club headquarters.

Since this time a Curator and a team of volunteers have been working to improve access and preservation. This work has led to numerous displays, exhibitions, publications and educational workshops which have showcased the Collection.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection dates from the birth of leisure touring caravanning in the 1880s through to its Centenary Celebrations in 2007 and beyond. Material includes a variety of memorabilia, publications, photographs, film footage and sound recordings reflecting the history of its services and members.

The Collection also acts as a custodian for the world's first leisure touring caravan which took to the road in 1885, The Wanderer, which is housed at Broadway Caravan and Motorhome Club Site
