Steve Soper, Joachim Winkelhock and Peter Kox drove this Super Tourer BMW to victory in the 1995 24 Hour Race at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. It was the 18th win for BMW in the event. Two years later Soper drove the car again to win the Guia Race, a supporting saloon car event at the annual Macau Grand Prix Formula Three race, held on the streets of the then Portuguese colony.
The 2 litre Super Touring formula for saloon car racing replaced Group A in the early 1990s. The new class was first seen in the British Touring Car Championship during 1990 and was adopted internationally in 1993. Rising costs and withdrawal of official works teams led to Super Tourers being dropped in favour of a new Super 2000 formula at the end of the decade.
