The AJS 7R was first marketed in 1949 as a production machine to meet the demand from freelance racing enthusiasts. It soon became known as the Boy's Racer and earned a fine reputation for its handling, performance and reliability. Successes came in races throughout the world and riders in the factory teams, usually on special development versions, won many classic events.

Production ceased in 1962 but freelance riders continuously rode 7Rs to success for many years afterwards.
