On 23 March 2016, pupils from St Denys Primary School, Southampton, took over a range of roles in the Collections Centre and Museum for a special Caravans & Charabancs themed ‘Takeover Day’.
Thirty enthusiastic students learned about how museums work when they visited the National Motor Museum for the Kids in Museums Takeover Day initiative. Working under the guidance of the project team the pupils undertook a variety of work, with some based in the Museum as education officers, telling visitors about the Caravans & Charabancs display.
Others were employed behind the scenes, discovering how collections are stored, conserved and documented. Some of the year five pupils also worked in the Motoring Reference Library researching information about charabancs and writing museum captions.
The pupils enjoyed getting hands-on experience with real motoring related objects and immersed themselves fully in their different roles. The pupils will be using their new skills to create their very own museum back in the classroom. The feedback from the students was very encouraging and some were even inspired to work in museums as a career.
