In 1903, Charles Sykes was engaged to work for The Car Illustrated. Most of the drawings he produced were in pen and ink, but occasionally he was asked to produce colour artwork for special editions.

The paintings shown here illustrate how he grasped this opportunity. The combination of romanticism and fantasy give a flavour of his work in the years leading up to the creation of his famous mascot.
