Anders Ditlev Clausager 1949 – 2025
30 July 2025
It is with deep sadness that the National Motor Museum marks the passing of our good friend, and sometime colleague, Anders Ditlev Clausager on 27th July 2025.

Anders’ name will be familiar to anyone with an interest in motoring history. He was the author or co-author of over twenty books as well as countless articles in the motoring press across more than four decades. Danish by birth, Anders’ understanding and mastery of the English language was second to none and could put many a native speaker to shame.
Having studied for a master’s degree in automotive design at the Royal College of Art from 1974-76, Anders worked at first for Volkswagen and later British Leyland. He became the archivist of BL Heritage (now the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust) in 1979, moving to the role of Chief Archivist with the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust in 2000 where he remained until retirement in 2012. Outside of his professional career Anders had a long involvement with the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain, including in the role of secretary from 2009. He served as a Trustee of the Michael Sedgwick Memorial Trust from 2010 onwards, latterly as its Vice Chairman.
Internationally, Anders was well-known as organiser of the series of European Conferences of Motoring History and as an attendee at the World Forum for Motor Museums.
Anders was well-known to many at the National Motor Museum and served for many years as a much-respected member of our Advisory Council which later became the Historic Advisory Panel. Most recently, Anders became a member of our Collections, Learning & Engagement Committee.
The historic motoring movement is so much the poorer with Anders’ passing and, more importantly, many people within our community have lost a dear friend. All at the National Motor Museum extend their condolences to husband David and the rest of Anders’ family at this sad time.
