During the 1920s and 1930s, the cold winter months also caused problems for motorists. Good quality products were developed to provide ease of starting in cold weather. Shell determined that different grades were necessary throughout the year, in order to protect cars from changing weather conditions. The importance of seasonal oils and petrols can be seen through the long running Summer and Winter campaigns of this period. Seasonal images promoted the need for these products: Summer adverts depicted sunny scenes of cricketers and tennis players, against the snowy views of the Winter series.
