This was the first and only Triumph with three cylinders and was introduced in September 1968 initially for the US market. At the time, American demand dictated machines with higher performance yet more refinement than the established twin-cylinder, 650cc models.
The design of the cylinder-head hemispheres and valve gear followed closely that of the twins. In the early 1970s, production-racing versions were notably successful in the United States and the Isle of Man. The BSA Rocket 3 was almost identical to the Trident.
