Tristram Hillier (1905-1983) was born in Peking and studied at the Slade and then in Paris, where he met and was influenced by the Surrealist painters. He became a member of the Unit One group in 1934. He travelled widely and gradually his work became more realistic and traditional, for which he was criticised.
